VectorEyes TM (VE)
vs. Generic GIS Web Viewers (GGWV)
VectorEyes: Does not require installation on a server. Because VE is an Applet where data files can be copied into a folder onto the server, and can be implemented throughout your entire organization.
GGWV: Requires a full server installation along with costly licensing agreements. Each workstation or user would than need to be charged a fee.
VectorEyes: Deals with vector files at the client’s end. This allows real-time panning and zooming because VE works in real time.
GGWV: Only deals with raster files at client’s end.Real-time panning and zooming is not possible. Any interaction by the user with the screen immediately sends a message back to the server, which then sends a JPEG image back to the user. This can be some what frustrating to the people working with the GIS on the Web.
VectorEyes: By dealing directly with vector files the processing power of client’s machine is also utilized, which increases the speed with which the viewer can see and interact with the GIS maps.
GGWV: Since every interaction with the screen necessitates a trip back to the server, the viewer’s interaction with the maps is slow and frustrating.
VectorEyes: Is not server intensive.
GGWV: Is very server intensive.
VectorEyes: Requires little bandwidth.
GGWV: Requires a lot of bandwidth as a result of the constant interaction of the client machine with the server.
VectorEyes: Our software requires a day for installation and training.
GGWV: Installation of the program requires both training and a considerable amount of time (and access to server’s system area).
VectorEyes: The look and feel of the end product can be easily customized.
GGWV: The look and feel of the end-product is basically set with limited customization and requires knowledge of Web-based programming languages and GGWV.
VectorEyes: The administrator can control all the key features of the site, including layer colors, layer visibility, layer line-widths, scale trappings, layer labels, and order of layers, via a simple point-and-click administrator interface.
GGWV: This requires knowledge of XML and GGWV. Typically a lot of Consultant fees are involved.
VectorEyes: The administrator can easily create unlimited queries and searches .
GGWV: This requires knowledge of XML and GGWV which sometimes involves for Consultants.
VectorEyes: A huge advantage of our software is that it can be used offline on any workstation or laptop and does not need to be connected to a server. This is very helpful for any field operations. Some examples are in Public Safety and Utilities.
GGWV: The product cannot be used offline, and has to be connected, online, to a server at all times, in order to be able to function. This would make field operations with GIS more costly.
VectorEyes: The user can interact directly with the screen, and can create new datasets and GIS points in real-time. This facilitates data collection from remote sites without any specialized GIS software directly over the Web-browser. This data can than be saved on a server in different GIS formats and can be used directly in a GIS package without any extra processing.
GGWV: Not possible. Data collection from remote location is not supported in GGWV and therefore cannot be used for public-polls or remote data input from site.
VectorEyes: Our software requires just a day or two for training and install. Our software support agreement provides our users with the needed assistance for maintaining the system without the need for consultants. Our clients have saved money in getting important GIS projects out on time and in budget.
GGWV: The amount of complexity involved with such packages many times are in the way for developing needed GIS applications in supporting your organization.
If you already have a GGWV in your organization VectorEyes TM Companion can work with it. Save your organization both time and money in better serving your users and organization. Contact us at info@cit-e.net for more information!
